The Company’s Arms

The Company’s arms carry the patten as their central device — a lasting emblem of the craft from which the Company takes its name.

Pattens were worn principally by women, giving rise to the Company’s motto ‘Recipiunt fæminæ sustentacula nobis’, meaning ‘Women receive support from us’, though men’s and children’s pattens also exist.

The arms are displayed on the Company’s banner, plate and ceremonial regalia, and among the treasures held at St Margaret Pattens. A stained glass window of the Company’s Arms was dedicated in the church in 2000, in conjunction with the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers.
